It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Hi, I’m Bridget. I’ve lived in St. Augustine, FL for 11 years and I have NEVER done the Nights of Lights Holly Jolly Trolley… until now.
I know what you’re thinking… HOW have you lived in St. Augustine for SO long and never made it onto the Holly Jolly Trolley?! Well, to be honest, I thought that as a local, I had seen what I needed to see. Nights of Lights is easily one of my favorite St. Augustine traditions, but I never felt quite compelled to get on the trolley to experience them.
Wow was I wrong. I was invited to attend the VIP Nights of Lights Kick-Off event this year and it has totally changed my opinion of the Holly Jolly Trolley. First, let me start by saying that this event was awesome!
The event was held at the Colonial Oak - a hidden gem of Historic St. George Street. The venue holds a special place in my heart as I spent many hours behind the bar during various events and, most recently, I stood next to one of my best friends as she got married under the Oak. The lanterns hanging from the incredible live oak gives the perfect ambiance. In addition to the venue, the Colonial Quarter and Chef John provided some delicious hors d’oeuvres for guests to snack on before the trolley ride as did the Casa Monica!. The San Sebastian Winery and St. Augustine Distillery were there serving some of their signature offerings included the brand new Cask Strength Old Fashioned Bourbon not yet released from the distillery.
Now that I have your mouth watering, let’s get back to the Holly Jolly Trolley. We sauntered down to the beginning of St. George Street to get on our VIP Trolley. From the moment I sat down, I was instantly in the Christmas spirit. Not only were holiday lights gleaming all around me, Christmas carols were billowing out the trolley speakers and everyone instantly jumped in to sing a along. While the lights themselves are gorgeous, our holographic glasses made the experience all the more exciting by turning all those white lights into snowflakes, snowmen or Santa Claus!
It became clear that this Holly Jolly Trolley experience was designed for everyone - families, adults, kids and yes, even locals. My advice to you is that if you haven’t given the Holly Jolly Trolley a chance, do it. That trolley ride will give you a great vacation from the stress that comes with the holiday season and remind you what it’s truly about - time spent with family and friends.
